Bills and financial papers of all periods provide evidence of the economic and social history of Princeton and central New Jersey. Stockton involvement in the mining and land speculation in California and elsewhere is also documented. |

This is the largest collection of papers of the Stockton Family of Princeton, a family prominent in local, state, and national affairs from the Revolutionary era through the early twentieth century. Beginning with Richard Stockton and his son-in-law, Benjamin Rush, both signers of the Declaration of Independence, succeeding generations of Stocktons attended the College of New Jersey, served in congress, led disguished military careers, and played leading roles in the development of New Jersey's railroads and canals. |
