James Waddel Alexander (March 13, 1804 - July 31, 1859) was an American Presbyterian theologian and the eldest son of Archibald Alexander. He moved to Princeton, New Jersey in 1812 when his father joined the faculty of Princeton Theological Seminary. Alexander graduated from Princeton University in 1820 and then attended Princeton Theological Seminary. He served as Professor of Rhetoric and Belles-Letters at Princeton University from 1833 until 1844, and as Professor of Eccleasiastical History and Church Government at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1849 until 1851. He is buried in Princeton Cemetery. Outside of Princeton, Alexander was the pastor of a Presbyerian church in Charlotte County, Virginia from 1826 to 1826, and of the First Presbyterian Church of Trenton, New Jersey from 1829 to 1832. He later served as the minister of the Duane Street Presbyterian Church (later the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church) in New York, New York from 1844 to 1849 and again from 1851 until his death in 1859. With his wife Elizabeth Clarentine Cabell (1809-1885), Alexander had seven children: George Cabell Alexander (1831-1839), Archibald Alexander (1832-1834), Henry Carrington Alexander (1835-1894), James Waddell Alexander (1839-1915), John Alexander (1845-1847), William C. Alexander (1848-1937), and Janetta Alexander (1850-1851). |
