Admin/Biographical History |
The junction of Mercer, Stockton, and Nassau Streets, now the location of the World War memorial, was once the site of several houses and a corner store. Howard Russell Butler, a landscape architect, proposed the creation of a small park on the site to accommodate the Princeton Battle Monument, commissioned in 1908. In 1914, a total of nine buildings were removed. Priest’s Pharmacy, the present Town Topics building, was moved back 60 feet. The scale of the Princeton Battle Monument was too overwhelming for the small site and as a result, the park lay empty for ten years until the World War memorial was built. |
