Description |
The first Dickinson Hall at Princeton University in the 1890s. The building was lost in a fire in 1920. This photograph shows the building after extensive renovations undertaken in 1877, which included the addition of a central tower. Dickinson Hall, built in 1869, was the first building at Princeton devoted entirely to classroom and lecture space and was also the first academic building constructed while James McCosh was University President. The lecture hall was named for Princeton's first president, Jonathan Dickinson, and was funded by his great-grandson John C. Green. George B. Post designed the building. In 1877, Edward D. Lindsey oversaw structural reinforcements and alterations to the building, including a new roofline and north entrance, an expanded third floor, and a central tower. |
