Description |
View of the Princeton University campus showing the steps between Blair Hall (or possibly Little Hall?) and Witherspoon Hall. Blair Hall was designed by the architectural firm Cope & Stewardson and built in 1897. The dormitory was a gift of John Insley Blair (1802-1899), Princeton University Trustee 1866 to 1899. His son, DeWitt Clinton Blair (trustee from 1900-1909) funded an extension of Blair Hall in 1907. Witherspoon Hall was designed by William A. Potter and Robert H. Robertson and was completed in 1877. It was built as a luxurious dormitory catering to wealthy students; Woodrow Wilson was one of the first residents. The western tower was removed in the 1940s after sustaining storm damage. The dormitory was extensively renovated in 1974 and again in 2002-2003. It was named for the sixth president of Princeton University, John Witherspoon. |
