Description |
The Upper Pyne Building at 74-76-78 Nassau Street. The shops shown in this photograph include Richard Rowland's bookstore. To the left of the alley is La Vake's Jewelry Store. A man stands on the front stoop of 76 Nassau Street, while two other men appear to be working on a bicycle on the far right. Moses Taylor Pyne built Upper and Lower Pyne for Princeton University in 1896. Raleigh C. Gildersleeve designed both buildings in a Gothic Revival or Tudor style. Initially, the buildings housed shops at the street level and undergraduate dormitories upstairs; the dormitories were converted to offices in the 1950s. In 1963, Upper Pyne was destroyed and the Princeton Bank and Trust Company building at 76 Nassau Street was built on the site. |
