The image of a young man on one side of the board is signed by Dabney H. Maury (1822-1900), who was an officer in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War, author of military training books, instructor at West Point, and a Confederate general during the Civil War. Underneath there is a seal and the inscription: "From the Studio of N. Brock, Asheville, N.C." The side with the young man is also signed, "As Ever, Dabney H. Maury."

A photograph of an unidentified couple is mounted on the other side of the board.
