Description |
The Mercer Oak at the Princeton Battlefield State Park, in winter. The tree was named for General Hugh Mercer, who died from wounds sustained at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. The tree became the Princeton Township logo and is featured in the seals of Mercer County, the New Jersey State Park Service, and the Mercer Engine Company No. 3. Unfortunately, the approximately 300-year-old tree was destroyed in by high winds on March 3, 2000. The Princeton Battlefield State Park preserves the site of the January 3, 1777 Battle of Princeton, in which General George Washington's troops defeated the British. |
